One morning
at the Arch.

22 February 2019, Cabo San Lucas. The arches were a long way off, so I zoomed in and kept it simple. About an hour and a half of painting in under three minutes.

Arch at Cabo, the finished oil sketch

The painting from this film

Arch at Cabo

12 × 9 in., oil on birch panel. Painted the morning of 22 February 2019, “about an hour and a half”.

A phone and a drone

How it
was shot.

Straight down

The drone overhead: the panel, the palette and the rocks behind me.

On the point

The drone low beside me while I paint, the sea behind the panel.

Over the shoulder

The phone on a tripod behind me, sped up sixteen times.

Two more cuts

The same morning, with only music.

The morning, cut to music

No talking. The sea, the palette, then the painting in a rush of cuts on the beat, with a few strokes slowed right down. About a minute and a half.

Music: “Journey (Ambient Remix)” by Oliver J Hughes, via Audiio.

Start to finish

Just the painting, blank panel to done, sped up, with slow-motion close-ups on single strokes and the sea underneath.

Music: “Worlds Apart” by William Hawkins Finn, via Audiio.

Once a month

Letters from
the road.

New paintings, where I’m painting next, and the first look at new prints. One email a month, nothing else.
