Commissions

Paint it bigger.
Or somewhere new.

A commission starts one of two ways. A small sketch stays with you, and I go back to the same spot and paint it large. Or you tell me about a place that matters, and I go there first.

How a commission works

Two ways
to a bigger painting.

From one of my sketches

  1. 01Pick a sketch: any painting on the Salon wall, or one already on yours.
  2. 02Pick a size. The slider keeps the sketch’s proportions, and the price moves with it: $22 per inch of width plus height.
  3. 03I paint it again, bigger, with the sketch as my starting point. A new original, not a print.

Somewhere I haven’t been

  1. 01Tell me where it is and why it matters: GPS coordinates or a map pin, and a photo if you have one.
  2. 02I look around on Google Earth first. If it’s a good fit, I go: sketches on the spot and my own photos.
  3. 03I paint the finished piece. The price depends on the size and what it costs to travel there.
Tell me about a place

From a sketch

I’ve done it
before.

Pick any painting of mine, one on this site or one already on your wall, and I’ll paint it again at the size you want. When I can, I go back to the same spot in the same light and use the sketch as my starting point.

A new original, painted bigger

Try one
bigger.

A commission is a new painting, not a print: pick a sketch and a size, and I paint it again, bigger. To scale: the chaise is about 66 inches long.

Devil’s Slide, 24 × 18 in.

A new oil painting, from the 12 × 9 sketch. Not a print.

Close enough

A bigger painting has room for bigger strokes. Move over it to see them at full resolution. This one is 14 × 11 inches, painted six days after an 8 × 6 inch sketch.

Kayaking in the Keys, 14 by 11 inches, in a floater frame

In my frame

The frame
I make.

I make my own floater frames: a quarter inch of natural wood around the edge, a black reveal, and the panel floats inside. Turn it to see the depth and the back. I still make these by hand and have some in stock for originals. For more choice, prints on canvas come in a ready-made floater frame from my print lab, in black, brown, gold, natural, silver or white.

Somewhere new

Or somewhere
I haven’t been.

I’ll take on a commission anywhere, as long as the place inspires me. I have to go there first, make sketches and take my own photos.

  1. 01Tell me about the place and why it matters: GPS coordinates or a map pin, and a photo if you have one. I’ll look around on Google Earth first to see if it’s a good fit.
  2. 02I visit, sketch it on the spot and take my own photos. Anywhere in the Okanagan, the visit is part of the price. If I’m already on a trip nearby, I’ll make a day of it. Further than that, fly me in and I’m there.
  3. 03I paint the finished piece at the size we agree on. The price depends on the size and what it costs to travel there.
Once a month

Letters from
the road.

New paintings, where I’m painting next, and the first look at new prints. One email a month, nothing else.
