The painting

In my
words.

Mazatlán was a stop on the way back up the mainland coast at the end of our 2020 winter. This is the view from Corazón de Mazatlán, painted in the late afternoon as the sun swung west and the shadows started to lengthen. I look for interesting shapes and values first, colour second, and this view had both: a strong dark foreground against a bright, open distance. Painted on location in one sitting, then left alone. Small paintings like this keep the feel of a place better than any photo I take.
