The painting
In my
words.
Jenny Lake sits right at the foot of the Tetons, and in May there’s still snow on the peaks and ice not long off the water. I painted this in the evening, as the sun got low and the mountains started to go blue against the sky. It’s a big view on a small panel, so it came down to getting a few shapes right: the mountain, the lake, the dark line of trees between them. Painted on location in one sitting and left exactly as it was.
From the day
On the easel,
where I stood.
Photos from the day I painted it: the panel on the easel, the light, the spot.
