I’ve read in many places that copying the greats of the past can teach you the most (besides painting from life). This is just a small portion of his sweet painting, but I love the saturated distant shadows of the Californian mountains. It’s something you see at sunset but it’s actually quite difficult to capture. I also like the value and colours in the shadows of the trees. Hopefully as I continue to study these masters, it’ll rub off. In all seriousness, one of the greatest parts of going on these trips is seeing great works of art in real life. So much different than in a book or on a screen. I plan on copying many of my faves over the next few months in the studio.
