Thank you for visiting Markjameslucas.com.
Wow! It’s already been five years since I’ve been painting full-time. I’m incredibly blessed for this opportunity to have been able to dedicate so much time to creating art. It’s been a life-changing experience. If you’d like to help me continue doing what I’m so passionate about, please support me by buying a painting, or commission me to do a larger painting of one of my smaller ones. Thank you for your support of the arts, and my personal journey.

Kihei Sunset
So many beautiful sunsets to be painted from this amazing location in Kihei, Maui.
South of Salinas.
Sometimes I take a sabbatical from my sabbatical. And sometimes that second sabbatical lasts a year. Mostly I wanted to see if I could remember how to mix and apply oil paint.
Point Reyes Clouds #2
It’s been a while since I’ve painted. Been missing it a lot lately, so time to get back into it. Getting my feet wet with these two bangers. Thanks for still following me through the year of radio-silence.
Point Reyes Clouds #1.

Sailboat at Ok Falls
It’s been a minute since I’ve enjoyed a plein air painting. Was good to get out there again.
White tree in Princeville, Kauai.
Any chance somebody knows what the name of this tree? It was on the island of Kauai. You’ll be helping me name this painting properly if you do. Thanks!
Vaseux Lake.
Happy Father’s Day! Especially to my papa! @mr.wjlucas
Tuc el Nuit stormy view.
Was a doozy today. Had to sit out two rain sessions. I’ve learned that the small windows between the rain bursts are by far the most interesting. This was one of those tranquil moments.
Ryegrass Rd.
Thanks to those that have made recent purchases. Still have lots available to those that are kicking tires. Send a message to inquire about availability and prices. Thanks! 🙏
McIntyre Creek Rd.
Had to pull the shoot on this one. Although I’m not dissatisfied with where it ended up. Storm was rolling in and I had a 20 min. Ride home. All in all, banged two of these out today. Love these cloudy/stormy days with no rain. Gotta be one of the best times of the year!
McIntyre Bluff from Vaseux Lake.
Keepin things real lose today.
Off Knippleberg Rd.
Back in the saddle after a small hiatus. It’s been a great beginning of summer despite all the shitty things that have been going on in the world right now. Hard to think that painting is of any importance in a time when a pandemic is happening a overdue protests around the globe are also simultaneously occurring. Perhaps there is not a better time to be painting. Standing alone on the edge of this windy hill in the Okanagan is where things seem to make most sense. I’ll continue doing this more often in the near future.
On another note, I hooked up a new way to explore some new painting areas. Swipe right to see what I’m talking about. I’m looking forward to painting and giving much overdue love to the Okanagan, the place we call home for most of the time. Thanks for reading, and be well, all.
Last light

Trying out a new frame. Swipe left to view it. What do you think of white frames? I’ve been liking a lot of paintings in white frames lately.

Salt Creek, Smoot, Wyoming.
Finally getting to some paintings of locations that I’ve been meaning to get to. This creek ran beside the road on my way through Wyoming after I spent some time in Utah in 2018. So many more scenes like this lined up in the queue.
Cypress on 17 Mile Drive.
16 x 20. Available. Framed or unframed. DM for details.
Be healthy and safe, all!
For quite a while I’ve been more interested in the color within the shadows than the highlights. There’s always so much going on there. The color of the actual object, and cast or reflected light are things that influence the color. This study was an exercise in observing the shadows and capturing the transitions on this foggy day. It’s also interesting observing the mood on a foggy day and trying to capture the light. Muted colors in the distance with more color in the foreground. There was so much going on in this scene that I had to edit some trees stumps out. I liked ‘em but if everyone in the symphony is playing at once, it’s chaos and hurts the ears.
This one is an 8 x 10 and is available. Swipe right to see it in a frame. DM me for details!
Near Pebble Beach, CA.
Working out the problems at a small size. 8 x 10. One correct stroke of correct value, color and edge is faster than several larger strokes. An 8 x 10 at this size only takes about 1-2 hours as opposed to if it were 16 x 20, might take a full day. Possibly 2. I’d rather only invest an hour or two to see if I like it, vs. a day.
Happy isolation ‘aryone. Hope you’re working on some hobbies.
Pebble Beach Shoreline Cliffs
12 x 12. Available. Swipe to see slightly angled shot.
Be safe everyone!
Pacific Grove Storm Clouds
This study is about muted colours and soft edges with a couple of hard edges.
Rock Shadows at Pebble Beach.
Abstract shapes of colour. Gradations. Hard edges versus soft edges. Line versus form. These are some of the reasons why I find rocks so interesting to study. Don’t think I’ll get sick of these for a while. This is just a little 8 x 10. I’m quite fond of this size for these studies. Not a huge time commitment and I can learn a lot.
Be smart and healthy, all.

SHOTS FROM THE EASEL
One of the most interesting aspects of how I create my art is that is all originates from being in nature. Being in and part of the landscape is without doubt where the energy comes from in my paintings. Here’s a collection of select photos of the paintings as they were completed, on the easel.
ABOUT ME
In 2014 after 12 years as an Art Director, I switched careers to become a full-time painter. I decided that I would spend the rest of my life fulfilling my lifelong desire to paint. It didn’t take long to realize that painting from life made the most sense…
MAP OF PAINTING LOCATIONS
Curious to see exactly where these paintings were created? Every winter, my partner and I travel to different parts of North America in our van. This year will be our fourth trip. I’ve made a map of pins on it of all the locations I’ve painted, from northern Alberta, to Hawaii, to Mexico. And almost everywhere in between. Well, not quite… yet.
